Ingredients

  • 4 medium turnips 2½–3 pounds, peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium celery root 1–1½ pounds, peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon pepper
  • Optional toppings: additional butter and nutmeg

Equipment

  • Large stockpot
  • Colander
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Potato masher or electric mixer
  • Cutting board
  • Chef’s knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Boil the Vegetables: Place the peeled, chopped turnips and celery root in a large stockpot, then add enough water to completely cover the vegetables.
  2. Cook Until Tender: Set the pot over high heat and bring the water to a boil.
Continue boiling for 35–45 minutes, or until the turnips and celery root are fork tender.
  3. Drain Thoroughly: Drain the cooked vegetables well, removing as much excess water as possible.
  4. Combine the Ingredients: Transfer the drained turnips and celery root to a large mixing bowl.
Add the heavy cream, butter, sour cream, salt, nutmeg, and pepper.
  5. Mash Until Smooth: Use a potato masher or electric mixer to mash or beat the mixture until smooth and thoroughly combined.
  6. Serve Immediately: Serve the mashed turnips while warm. If desired, finish with additional butter or a light sprinkle of nutmeg.

Notes

  • Peel and chop the turnips and celery root before boiling so they cook evenly.
  • Make sure the vegetables are fork tender before draining; this helps them mash smoothly.
  • Drain the cooked vegetables well before adding the cream, butter, and sour cream.
  • A potato masher creates a rustic texture, while an electric mixer can produce a smoother mash.
  • Serve the mash immediately for the best warm, creamy texture.
  • Additional butter or a light sprinkle of nutmeg can be used as optional toppings.
