Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 3/4 cup heavy/whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup butter 1 stick, plus extra for serving
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large pot for boiling the potatoes
  • Small saucepan for warming the cream mixture
  • Colander for draining the potatoes
  • Hand-held potato masher
  • sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or heat-safe spoon

Method

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel the potatoes, or leave some or all of the skin on if preferred, making sure they are scrubbed well. Cut the potatoes into thirds.
  2. Boil the Potatoes: Place the potatoes in a pot of salted water and boil until a sharp knife easily pierces them, indicating that they are tender.
  3. Warm the Cream Mixture: While the potatoes cook, combine the heavy cream, butter, minced garlic, salt, and pepper in a small saucepan.
Warm the mixture slowly over low heat, allowing the garlic to gently cook and infuse its flavor into the cream.
  4. Drain the Potatoes: Thoroughly drain the cooked potatoes, then return them to the pot.
  5. Mash the Potatoes: Slowly pour the warm cream mixture over the potatoes.
Use a hand-held potato masher to mash everything together until the cream has been absorbed and the potatoes reach a smooth consistency.
  6. Avoid Over-Mashing: Stop mashing once the potatoes are nicely smooth and combined.
Avoid excessive mashing, as overworking the potatoes can make them gluey.
  7. Finish the Potatoes: Serve the mashed potatoes topped with extra butter and, if desired, chopped chives and/or parsley.

Notes

  • The recipe serves 6–8 depending on portion size, although the source lists 8 servings.

  • Some or all of the potato skins can be left on if they are scrubbed well before cooking.
  • Warm the cream, butter, garlic, salt, and pepper gently over low heat while the potatoes boil.
  • Mash the potatoes by hand and stop once the cream has been absorbed and the potatoes are smooth.
  • Avoid over-mashing, as this can make the potatoes gluey.
  • Chopped chives and/or parsley are optional finishing garnishes.
